PJSC Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya Company is an official partner of the UN Development Programme and Global Environment Fund Project sponsored by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Russia’s Energy Sector Policies and Operations”.
In 2012 PJSC Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya Company in cooperation with the Kemerovo Region Administration, scientific and public organizations established the first landscape reserve -Karakansky Natural Reserve by allocating part of its lands with unique steppe ecosystems into a natural reserve.
The natural reserve has become a unique pilot site for the UNDP/GEF Project sponsored by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Russia. Under the aegis of the project specialists of Kuzbass Botanical Garden along with PJSC Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya Company have developed an innovative technology of restoration of meadow and steppe plant communities on the mine dumps and disturbed lands of the Company. The technological solution included preparation of the seed material on the mother steppe sites with further seeding on the mine dumps.
This time a key botanical territory of Bachatsky Sopki, which is the largest mass of steppe vegetation surviving in central Kuzbass, has become a protected site. There remained nearly untouched forb-fescue-feather grass and vermouth steppes. The number of plants and animals listed in the Red Book of Kuzbass comprises over 20 species. The area of the steppe reserve area totaled to 709 ha.
Now it is reasonable to suppose that the creation of the natural reserves, at its core, is the strategy of creation of genetic banks able to give seed material in the future for restoration of floral diversity in the territories designed for recultivation.
