Kemerovo region as a constituent unit of the Russian Federation is located in the south-east of Western Siberia at the junction of plain and mountainous areas and represents an extremely diversified territory in natural and economic respect covering 95,700 sq.km.
Plains cover half of the regional territory in the west and north-east. Western part of the region is covered with the intermountain area called Kuznetsk Depression, whereas its north-east and northern pat are covered with Mariinsk-Achinsk forest steppes. Mountain bordering of the Kuznetsk Depression exercises a significant influence over the climatic peculiarities and formation of soil and vegetation zones. Piedmont areas are covered with grey forest soils to be formed under the forest vegetation.
Mountainous areas are characterized by considerable rainfall (up to 3000mm) and mountain deep podzol soils to be formed under taiga vegetation are predominant in this area. Mountain tundra soils are located on the tops of the mountains.
Taking into account high natural value of these territories PJSC «KTC» management made a resolution with respect to free assignment of the land lots owned by the company to organize a regional natural area reserve. Total area of the lands assigned comprises 1 115.2 hectares. Moreover, PJSC «KTC» has taken upon itself financing of the research to be carried out in the natural area reserve.
As a result there was established a specially protected natural area (SPNA). PJSC «Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya Company» and UN Development Program signed an agreement for cooperation with regard to research, nature conservation and energy saving.
